Gillian Anderson is stellar in this dizzyingly cinematic production of Tennessee Williams' classic play. A salutatory reminder in these difficult days. But the characterisation is so thin that you never care about what happens to any of the characters. All round outstanding performance with great music and very catchy songs. The writing of Tennessee Williams is more modern that anything I know in the West End or on Broadway right now. A family visit as part of my daughter's UCL course and went to see Ends Walsh`s latest play Ballyturk starring Cillian Murphy and Mikei Murphi. That’s what the Young Vic’s production of Tennessee Williams’ 1947 play manages to capture on stage: the curve of the human heart and mind. Ben Foster echoes her subtle turn with a similarly nuanced Stanley, giving the plain-speaking brute a soft, sympathetic edge.
