This movie shocked me by not being a corporate-friendly McCartney fest, no, it showed how America was falling apart at its seams then because. It's groundbreaking, spectacular, extraordinarily rare and crazy, but not for the faint of heart.
I usually hate it when people try to recreate these classic songs, but there are several instances in the film when I was just blown away by their quality. Whoever categorized this movie as a musical probably never saw a musical. Julie Taymor's "Across the Universe" is an audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heart-warming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles songbook. Across the Universe will have ardent defenders, but in the long run, it will do nothing to infuse life into the current mini-revival of movie musicals and is as soft-headed as the wishful refrain “All You Need Is Love.” Maybe that works in real life but not in the movies, sister.

Elements of Across the Universe are shockingly awful and the film lasts at least 30 minutes past the bearable stage. They are also joined by a small group of friends and musicians, with "Dr. Robert" and "Mr. Kite" as their guides.

And yes, that is Salma Hayek in the chorus line of sexily sinister nurses, perhaps repaying Taymor for lending her dramatic credibility with "Frida.". Across the Universe is an audacious feat for which director Julie Taymor deserves much praise, but the movie falls short. Your head might explode. But if you like the Beatles and the idea of hearing about 20 covers of their work fills you with a perverse joy, this may be the movie for you. To call it trippy would be an understatement. Visually stunning, great cast and fantastic covers.
When young dockworker Jude (Jim Sturgess) leaves Liverpool to find his estranged father in America, he is swept up by the waves of change that are re-shaping the nation.
After the first 50 minutes, the characters meander around. Jude falls in love with Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), a rich but sheltered American girl who joins the growing anti-war movement in New York's Greenwich Village. This is a musical for gods sake.
