Look no further than Netflix's Kingdom--read our Season 2 review below. While the series does suffer a little from overacting and misplaced humour, for the most part Kingdom does an excellent job across its 6 episodes to never feel like it’s outstayed its welcome.

The director of Kingdom is Kim Seong-hun.

There are elements of political maneuvering with the Queen and the revealed fate of the King but for the most part the central focus is on our group.

Character portrayals are important and so is showing things rather than simply stating them with a few lines of dialogue. And if you have watched some of the biggest hit movies from South Korea, then you also know her from The Host and The Tunnel. All Rights Reserved. Being both a zombie and political drama helps to make sure that there is never a boring moment in Kingdom. We are also finally introduced to the snitch who has been giving up Lee Chang’s actions at every corner to the Haewon Cho clan, though it is difficult to hold him accountable for his actions once we find out his reason for doing so. Kingdom is a Netflix series made in South Korea, and since we love Korean horror productions, this is our kind of show. Fans of zombies are sure to love Kingdom and the reinvigorated setting and tone of the series works so well to heighten tensions. Fans of the first season will definitely not want to miss this as it brings everything you love about the first movie and adds onto it, with more backstory, more character development, and of course, more Usain Bolt-like zombies. In a really good way. If the first three episodes are already this good, then we certainly can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. Though we do not see as much of Seo Bi in the first three episodes of Season Two, she still definitely played a key role in a major event in episode two and three.

It does take time to get into, but it is worth it in the end. Go figure! I won’t reveal what that is here of course but suffice to say, it may just offset the balance of the second season. Episode 4

I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Even though this is a zombie show, the zombies don’t really make an appearance until the very end of episode 1. If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it.

It works surprisingly well too although very late on a new plot revelation turns the concept completely on its head. Though the zombies do actually move in a somewhat similar way. Split across six hour-long episodes, Kingdom effortlessly blends political drama with a thrilling action plot, full of beautifully shot set pieces. Director: Kim Seong-hunWriter: Kim Eun-heeCast: Ju Ji-hoon, Bae Doona, Ryu Seung-ryong. The cliffhanger ending is a bit of a gut punch but despite that, there’s enough here to keep you hooked throughout and eager to sink your teeth into the inevitable second season. With a second season already green-lit, it’ll be interesting to see where Kingdom goes from here but based on these 6 episodes, Kingdom looks set to be the latest undead craze and just what the genre needed. Oh, and I should also mention that, of course, you can watch Kingdom dubbed in English on Netflix. This was done at the expense of the villagers living in Sumang, Yeong Shin’s hometown, who were sacrificed to be turned into zombies to help fight in the war.

Season Two picks up right where Season One left off, with Crown Prince …

If you liked Train to Busan and you’ll give the story a chance, then you should enjoy this. Whether it be Seo-Bi stepping up and showing off her empathetic selflessness or Lee Chang’s inner conflict around his lineage and morality, there’s enough to chew over here to keep the quieter moments in the series worth sticking with.

However, the zombies in Kingdom are very different from what we see in other zombie movies and TV shows. Episode 3 In Kingdom, this also means we get to see the most gorgeous shots of both Korean nature, culture, and architecture. It’ll come eventually. Not in their overall look or how they act. The slow-burn is rewarded with lots of brutal events later on. I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. Recommended: Read our review of the brilliant Korean zombie movie Train to Busan here >. Taking cues from 2015’s zombie game Dying Light, Kingdom uses the same rules around its zombies here. Chaos inevitably breaks out and what follows are several episodes of thrilling chases, fighting and generally well shot action sequences placed between the characterisation of our dysfunctional group fighting to survive. You might just be one ladder away from finally being (temporarily) safe from the zombie horde but oh no, there is a swarm of zombies right on your tail, ready to bite you as you attempt to make your way up the ladder. This is typical of Korean storytelling. It’s here where we’re introduced to Crown King Lee Chang who, upon noticing letters up around the City declaring his Father’s dead, is refused entry to see him courtesy of the cold, calculated Queen. The entire run of Kingdom is now available on Netflix. Episode 1 They also tend to go for the neck to bite, but this may just be because it’s easy to access due to the lack of clothing. Not at this level, but getting there. Though Kingdom is mainly known for its zombies, it is also very much a political drama, filled with plot points commonly associated with one. Episode 5 For people who don’t watch Korean productions, Kingdom has Doona Bae in one of the leading roles. During episode 2 we get a bit more information and see more of them. For example, he has the glorious line “What about the beef pancakes?” which comes at a very indelicate time! However, the two first episodes really do spend a lot of time just setting the stage. Criminal is one of those fun Netflix experiments that are supposed to be like an event. So just surrender to this glorious take on a zombie apocalypse in ancient Korea. For one, they seem to go into hibernation during the daytime and only “wake up” once the sun sets. Season Two picks up right where Season One left off, with Crown Prince Lee Chang and his battalion setting up camp to ward off the zombies but now, the zombies don’t go to sleep the moment the sun is up, because they never did. Beautifully presented and dripping in Asian culture, zombie action-thriller Kingdom is quite the thrill ride. From Korean movies, you may also recognize Ju Ji-hoon who plays the Crown Prince. While strange rumors about their ill king grip a kingdom, the crown prince becomes their only hope against a mysterious plague overtaking the land. Review of Season One: KINGDOM is the second top-notch zombie production to come from South Korean, following the film TRAIN TO BUSAN. The story begins slowly, using its first episode to show off the gorgeous setting of Hanyang in South Korea as we revel in the rich history this culture has to offer. 13/03/2020 25/01/2019 by Greg Wheeler . This happened before the news of Kingdom came, but they’re starting with this zombie drama. Are there deaths? Something I really loved! Now that Netflix has unveiled the best show you never saw, it needs to give its cult following a fourth season to properly wrap up the story line. We highly recommend you watch the first season to properly understand what led to the events in the second season’s first episode, though even if you haven’t watched it, you can still enjoy Season Two for all its zombie-filled action.
