Doves have emerged from the studio after their eleven-year hold on new music with ‘Carousels’, a swirling, percussive groove that emphatically unfurls their flag at the peak of British music once more. “Places where you had your first experience of sound systems and music being played really loud.”, Produced by Doves, engineered by Dan Austin and mixed by Craig Silvey, ‘Carousels’ had initially found life far from the North of England, with Jez Williams packing the idea in luggage for a creative trip to Porto, refining it among the steep streets and rich culture of the vibrant Portuguese city before returning to Doves’ own, famed Frank Bough III Studios. Doves I will burn ten different CD’s with different orders and the other guys will do the same.

We've actually made a start on recording it. I can’t wait to get out there, connect with people and see the whites of people’s eyes. You want the first track to welcome you to the record and whilst it’s clichéd, you want to go on a journey. It was quite militant. We heard them last year on BBC6Music on Gilles Peterson. Artist: Doves. It’s great. We had a really good laugh making it and we had the benefit of having a lot of material at the start of it which we hadn’t before because all three of us have been writing away from the band. We also had a couple of songs from the vaults, so to speak, which we managed to nail this time which was so gratifying.
It’s the first time that we’ve put an album out without the usual shows. We did a warm up the night before in Warrington which helped but it was intimidating in such a grand venue. We’ve played these songs live in the studio a lot and we’ve not been over pressured. How excited are you to play the songs live?
Throughout the ‘00s, Doves were responsible for some of indie-rock’s most exquisite music.

What made you decide on Carousels as the first release from The Universal Want? You played the Teenage Cancer Trust Gig at Royal Albert Hall in 2019. Are there any songs from previous Doves albums that you’re really looking forward to playing again? Once you have your first track, middle track/start of side two and your closer, it becomes a lot easier. It was among the first new ideas that the band shared between each other when the life-long friends first picked up instruments as a band again, with Goodwin struck by its immediacy. But for our own artistic career, it’s so important for us to be moving forward and push ourselves, surprise ourselves and push ourselves and some kind of relevance. Required fields are marked *. It’s really important to give a song an emotional connection and to talk about things. Do you feel like there will be more material from Doves in the future? When we’re recording I don’t tend to listen to specific things but during lockdown I’ve listened to a lot of music. There’s something about putting a record on. We were looking at it and thought that this is where we feel the music is at. You’ve had plenty of takers remixing Doves songs in the past; the sadly departed Andrew Weatherall, Sasha, Four Tet, Lindstrom, Playgroup…who’s idea was it to have The Comet Is Coming remix Carousels? We haven’t got a problem playing those old songs because, luckily for us, they mean a lot to people.
There is none of the chasing of their own tail that you sometimes find with reformed bands, desperate to prove the magic is still there, just an ease of musical expression and songs radiating with warmth.
