It didn't even bother me much when the coincidences of meeting just the right people started piling up, after all without them the book would probably be boring showing us how they all died without medicine or something ;) The thing that started bothering me the most was the character of Juniper.

Most people won’t even drink it, but I’m glad I don’t have to drill my own well and stoke up a fire if I want to wash dishes. Somehow I get the feeling this came from a late night session of "what if", as in, "What if everything just stopped working." One of the best and most realistic dystopian novels I have read - I can't recommend this book/series enough!!! The first and best of the trilogy. The protagonists are smart, industrious and good. Will Hutton, Eric Larsson and an escort from the Bearkillers arrive bringing information that the Portland Protective Association has constructed two castles to block a pass through the mountains. Very detailed nonsense but nonsense all the same. A real man busts his ass to feed his family, fights for them if he has to, dies for them if he has to. Mike Havel prepares to launch a hang-glider borne attack on the castle. After this brief flash, modern technology no longer works. The moment I realized that 50% of Stirling's characters were frustrated Renaissance Festival "swordswomen" who were finally going to be taken seriously in the post-apocalypse and that he WASN'T doing it for comedy's sake, I had to give up. In an instant, civilization is propelled backward to the middle ages. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story immensely, felt it was well developed once I accepted the fantasy lead-in. A readable copy. I gave it half way through, but could take no more. What follows is the most terrible global catastrophe in the history of the human race---and a Dark Age more universal and complete than could possibly be imagined. Roving marauders, power mad despots and desperate groups that have turned to cannibalism now plague the world. The story is more fantasy than sci-fi with an interesting set up and decent plot. That is, I like post-apocalyptic books that focus on characters that are moral and them struggling to overcome great odds and, to some extent, succeed.
Apparently, judging by the reviews here, Stirling's books have a fanatical following reminiscent of Twilight.
