The base is named after Major Carlo Ederle, an Italian hero of World War I and recipient of the French Croix de Guerre (French War Cross), among other military honors.
The 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment was stationed at Caserma Ederle from April 1996 until it was reflagged as the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment in June 2006. Today, the army base acts as the backbone to several units, including the U.S Army Africa Headquarters, the 173d Airborne Brigade Combat Team, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command-Italy, the U.S Army Health Clinic, and Camp Darby, located in Livorno, Italy. In 1951, the U.S. and Italy signed an agreement that the U.S. would operate lines of communication across Italy, and that the U.S. would occupy land near Livorno. Army Africa, as the Army Service Component Command for U.S. Africa Command, enables full spectrum operations while conducting sustained security engagement with African land forces to promote security, stability, and peace. USAG Italy also supports elements of the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), the 21st Theater Sustainment Command-Italy, the 509th Signal Battalion, the U.S. Army Health Clinic Vicenza, the Vicenza Dental Clinic, AFN Radio and Television and other units and organizations. It has also formed several subordinate programs, such as: The State Partnership Program, which connects the U.S National Guard to different African nations for military training and relationship-building. Caserma Ederle serves as the headquarters of U.S. A… LTC Ronald L. Little assumed command of the 5th Battalion, which consisted of A, B, and Headquarters batteries. This land became Camp Darby, located in Pisa, named for Brigadier General William O. Darby, who was killed in action in northern Italy on 30 April 1945. Vicenza has a population of just over 160,000 people.
The United States Armed Forces own and operate command posts all over the world, including several overseas in Europe and Asia.
On 20 October 1963, the 5th Battalion (Sergeant Missile), 30th Field Artillery was activated in Caserma Ederle. Soldier strength dropped to 2,500 in 1970 and civilian employment went down 70 percent in a unilateral cost-reduction effort. Housing units for accompanied soldiers and their dependents are located in separate, gated areas of Vicenza known as Villagio della Pace, meaning “Village of Peace.” Single offices, more often than not, live on the economy.
Soldiers living in the base unaccompanied typically live in barracks located on Caserma Ederle’s grounds or in government-leased housing in the local community. With Austria now neutral, northern Italy's eastern flank became vulnerable to attack.
