We opted for the Lake Wanaka/Rocky Mountain Summit Hike which is also in Mt Aspiring National Park in the Diamond Lake Conservation area. And it didn't really improve the view.
Great for small groups of family and friends who want a private experience. It was a glorious day and we knew it would be packed and with a line for THE shot plus the elevation gain is no joke. We have done the Roy's Peak track and the walk up the valley from Raspberry Flats. You will discover an amazing range of award winning wines including pinot noir, rosé, riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and sparkling wine. Quite a tough walk (especially as it was so hot) up a gravel track to the plateau on which the lake sits - quite an unusual location! This was a gem of a hike and now one of my favorites. It was stunningly gorgeous and left me with no regrets of not doing the Instagram famous hike. Just the drive to the hike from Wanaka town is gorgeous and you will drive right by the car park for Roy’s Peak. I must admit, as we drove by, I did feel a pang of regret.
You don’t have to do the whole hike to get a rewarding experience with tremendous views but at least go as far as Lake Wanaka Lookout which is a wonderful viewpoint. Diamond Lake Conservation Area is 18.5 km west of Wanaka on the Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road. You will travel in a luxury air-conditioned SUV with leather seats, generous legroom, extra headroom, sunroof and USB power.
Nice short walk around a pretty lake. MOUNTAIN VIEW CHALET PROPERTY SUMMARY: Mountain View Chalet is a beautiful, purpose-built, modern, alpine chalet. Struggled a bit to find the carpark, it's not well signposted from Wanaka, just a small yellow signs for Diamond lake, so watch out! There are several points on the trail to stop off for a great selfie and to just step off and admire the views. If you go all the way to Rocky Mountain Summit it’s just over 4 miles return with roughly 2516 feet of elevation gain.
